SpiceJet to shift 22 domestic flights from T1 to T2

SpiceJet has announced that it will shift 22 flights from Terminal 1 (T1) of Indira Gandhi International airport to Terminal 2 (T2) following March 25. All the remaining flights of the airline will continue to operate from Terminal 1. To be shifted are flights serving the sectors of Cochin, Ahmedabad, Patna, Pune, Goa, Surat, and Gorakhpur. To facilitate easier identification for passengers, the airline has programmed all the new flights operating to and from T2 to have a four digit flight number starting with number ‘8’, for example SG 8913. The low-cost airline has arranged for regular bus service between the terminals for passengers for use by transit flyers as well as those who might come to the wrong terminal for their flight have also been made.

UK think tank pushes for cheaper visas for Indians

A leading UK-based think tank has released a research to support its call for a new, more economical visa regime to attract Indian visitors to the country. The new UK-India Visa Agreement being proposed would reduce the cost of a two-year visa from 388 pounds to just 89 pounds and allow travellers to make repeat visits within two years. This would mirror the reduced cost two-year multiple entry visa that was launched in January 2016 for visitors travelling both ways between the UK and China.

Mumbai to Pune in just 25 minutes

Come 2024, the travel time between Mumbai, the financial capital of India to Pune, a leading manufacturing & IT hub will be drastically shortened to just 14-25 minutes. What's more the cost of travel will be pegged at almost the same price as travelling in a cab or airplane, as Richard Branson backed Virgin Hyperloop One signed the framework agreement with the Maharashtra government to build a hyperloop between Pune and Mumbai beginning with an operational demonstration track.

Data is key to travel budget optimisation

Influence traveller behaviour

This is an area where business data analysis can make a big impact.

According to a study by the GBTA Foundation, 59% of business travelers said they went out of policy on at least one major travel expense on their latest trip and 90% made a conscious choice that went against specific policy, such as buying business class air instead of economy or staying an extra hotel night.

“The best way to influence this type of behavior is to look for accumulated patterns. Consider analyzing data each month to monitor activity and work with managers of defaulters to make them aware of the patterns of out of policy behavior and the accumulated costs,” suggests a UNIGLOBE expert.

“Once travelers know you are inspecting this data, you might be surprised to see measurable changes in employee behavior across the board,” adds the expert.

Strategic analysis of travel data can allow businesses to investigate past expenditures to identify patterns of travel policy violation and deviations from budgeted expenditure for suitable course correction. With an intuitive approach to data analysis, organisations can also predict upcoming spends and projections to take informed decisions.

“Leveraging tools like the UNIGLOBE Complete Access Online can help you take a bite out of big data analysis. With access to travel booking data in the form of comprehensive reports, you can analyse your core travel and expense data to improve expense management across functions,” concludes the UNIGLOBE expert.

The Great Divide in Researching Travel

UNIGLOBE Travel experts reveal that the ease and convenience of shopping for flights, hotels, rental cars and other travel products online actually masks a few crucial, ongoing truths.

The internet – friend or foe?

The answer is…it’s both! The internet is actually a very very big “pipe” to an infinitely expanding universe

of websites featuring millions of flight and hotel (and other) options, but it’s actually only one channel through which you might obtain information about buying travel. Did you know that when you enter a date and a destination into a website search screen, no single travel website will return every possible result? If you can’t find a seat on the flight you want using a website, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a seat available. As demand increases, airlines often release more seats for sale, but it may take a few hours for a website to catch up. Or the airlines and hotel companies my withhold inventory and pricing from some channels as a way of improving their revenue yields through selective distribution across the world.

So where IS the best place to find all the information?

Meet the modern travel agency – where the best options can be found by blending online channels with an expert consultant/agent using both skills and tools to see a bigger landscape of options. Expert agents use the Internet for research too, but they also have at their fingertips a much bigger, more diverse toolbox including agent-only resources such as the GDS (the ‘global distribution system” – a system fed directly by the airlines, hoteliers and other travel suppliers) and also a private system featuring fares sourced by a network of living, breathing contacts around the world with ‘local’ knowledge and “local” market fares and inventory. When a UNIGLOBE travel expert searches for an airfare, he or she actually searches several sources or “channels” at once – as a result, travelers stand a much better chance of receiving well-researched travel options. What does this mean? Simply put, it could mean better options, lower airfares and improved availability.

As a UNIGLOBE Travel consultant who handles major corporate accounts for a software firm explains, “I arrange complicated, international itineraries all the time. Some of my clients end up hopping from city to city in Asia. Lots of changes before, during and after travel is common and sometimes the only way to get changes made without big costs is to have a conversation with the airline directly, Over the years, I’ve developed really strong relationships with our airline partners, and where appropriate, I’ll pick up the phone and call my contacts directly to request some assistance in sorting things out. Knowing where to look and who to purchase from has allowed us to deliver significant savings on airfares because we could find a better fare through a partner UNIGLOBE agency in another country. That’s not something you’re going to find yourself online.”

Should you avoid the Internet completely then? What’s the Bottom-line here?

Don’t get us wrong. The Internet isn’t bad – the real culprit is solely relying on the Internet for travel information and buying. But, what can you do?

Always choose a travel company that offers the best of both worlds, online self-service that includes research (and online booking) as well “expert assisted” bookings that improve your airfares, proactively warn you about restrictions and also use cutting edge technology to improve services with tools such as the UNIGLOBE Complete Access Online - and that’s where the DIFFERENCE lies!

Let’s face it. You’ll still turn to the Internet when you want to research that personal holiday to Dubai. And, maybe you’ll even share what you find with your friends and family. That’s exactly why the idea isn’t to ignore online travel research. It’s a good thing. Companies like UNIGLOBE Travel are taking your travel research capabilities one step further with hundreds of product listings, traveler reviews and a vast collection of things to do, sights to see and more in your favorite destinations.

The bottom-line is to recognize that online travel information is not ALL the information so don’t be caught on the wrong side of the great divide – get BOTH sides …and that’s why working with an expert like your friendly UNIGLOBE Travel agency makes SO much sense.

Know Your Premium Economy

With airlines around the world adding premium economy cabins, you can now fly long-haul in relative comfort for about 20 to 40 percent more than a full economy fare.

“Premium economy is ideally suited to anyone who wants to travel further and more often, without burning through a travel budget in a single trip. It is a practical option for business travelers whose corporate policies ban business class bookings, for small businesses, and for entrepreneurs,” opines a UNIGLOBE expert.

There’s more to premium economy class than extra legroom, luggage allowance and priority boarding. To be sure that you’re enjoying the full premium economy experience in case you to choose to fly with an airlines that does offer one, ask yourself these four key questions:

1. Does your ticket buy a special seat?

This is a standard requirement for true premium economy. You should expect a wider seat with greater recline, leg rests and an adjustable head-rest. You should also expect more leg-room, but that is a common feature on economy-plus-but-not-premium-cabins.

2. How well will that movie play?

A larger (often better resolution) in-flight entertainment screen is another common feature of Premium Economy. Premium Economy seats are wider than standard economy seats so airlines have room to improve your cinematic experience.

3. Who else is in there?

The operative word in a premium economy cabin is “cabin”. It should be a relatively separate space, with dedicated service. Sometimes that means a secluded section at the front of Economy class, but most often there is full separation with a divider wall.

4. How much attention are you getting?

Airlines offering premium economy cabins, even some offering “plus,” will at least give you a little keepsake amenity kit for the journey, and often a dedicated menu. You should also expect special attention at the airport and in the cabin.

After all, you're paying for “premium,” so you should get your money’s worth.

The Experts’ View: Top 5 Business Travel Trends for 2018

On the other, more companies will turn to the power of new technology and tools to drive cost efficiency and travel policy compliance. Read on to make the most of the top trends in business travel to drive the success of your travel program in 2018.

New Tools to Drive Savings, Efficiency & Compliance
Business travel often involves unplanned flights, last minute hotel booking which can be hard to pull together at short notice. Hence, this year corporates will take to new travel tools to drive savings, efficiencies and compliance. Adopting a system like the UNIGLOBE complete online allows companies to control costs through automated trip authorizations, reporting and policy compliance. This gives business managers access to greater transparency and better reporting on potential budget “problem” areas, which when addressed can help save more money.

Arrive For Work, Stay To Play
According to UNIGLOBE experts as the competition for talent heats up, employers will look to travel programs as meaningful benefits for employees who want to take advantage of business destinations and have a productive trip. The line between traveling for work and leisure will blur further as companies seek programs that offer a more flexible work-life balance to attract prospective employees and keep current employee morale high. Deploying the expertise of a travel management company like UNIGLOBE, could save your companies money on both business and leisure travel, and, at the same time, help your travellers relax and have fun on their trip.

Focus on Cybersecurity
In 2018, we’ll be hearing a lot more about “cybersecurity”. Fraudsters are moving on from traditional transactional fraud towards the rich target of traveler profile and booking data, causing a renewed focus on industry solutions for privacy and security. Profile data can give criminals access to passport and credit card numbers, home addresses and contact details, and even family and personal preferences. “At UNIGLOBE, we conform to the highest standards of security to safeguard your data. Your UNIGLOBE profile data is stored in an encrypted file to ensure no individual can access your personal information stored in the file, thus preventing the possibility of identity theft or any other form of information misuse. Also, all payments you make through our web resources are routed via a secured payment gateway to prevent sensitive information like your credit card details from exposure to fraudulent use,” says a UNIGLOBE expert.

Rise of Technology for Enhanced Traveller Experience
Technology isn’t new to the travel industry. From airline apps that replace paper boarding cards to self-check in at airports, technology has been revolutionising travel by maximising efficiencies, improving experience and increasing choice and options for the business travellers worldwide and increasingly in the Indian market. A prime example of this is Wi-Fi onboard aircraft. With the Indian telecom regulator allowing flyers in India access to both internet and mobile services on board aircraft, the experience is only set to get better this year.

Incentivization To Save Companies Money
Incentives are nothing new, but typically points programs to reward employees for spending less when travelling on company dime. In 2018, UNIGLOBE experts predict companies to increasingly turn to this model to reward people for choosing the most cost-effective options. “Companies can typically save 20% on their travel and entertainment expenses, even after the cost of incentives, when they provide employees with redeemable rewards points for spending less,” concludes a UNIGLOBE expert.

Is your travel policy having a negative impact on your travellers?

They point out that there is a correlation between travel policy and traveller satisfaction and higher satisfaction correlates with high compliance.

There is no shortage of ideas around how to design a policy that saves costs on an annual basis. If the primary consideration is to reduce the costs on a budget line, then it is relatively easy to reduce your policy to a transactional model. This means making business travels less frequent, decrease the flexibility of fares purchased, use lower category hotels, etc.

However, UNIGLOBE experts argue in favour of a more holistic approach. This means considerations beyond price, such as productivity. This creates an opportunity to demonstrate the ‘value’ gained for the amount of travel purchased. As a business, you need to define your own version of ‘value’ of course. And then work with your UNIGLOBE expert to find the optimum place where costs are optimized against the ‘value’ or productivity garnered.

Does your company consider ‘travel outcome’ more important than a traveller would rate ‘willingness to travel’ for example? In other words, if the metrics that measure your travel policy do not include traveller experience and satisfaction, then you may be missing a key factor in the value garnered equation.

Ensure cost savings, high traveller satisfaction, high compliance, and optimized value for your travel program in 2018! Work with your UNIGLOBE expert to find the sweet spot of optimized productivity and employee satisfaction in your travel policy.

Hotels introduce A.I Devices

Leading hotel brands like Marriott and Starwood are currently testing digital assistants in hotel rooms. Guests who stay in a room with an artificially intelligent assistant can have the device perform a number of tasks, including tell the time, play music, order room service, and even open or close the curtains.

The idea is to determine which digital assistant customers prefer. In addition to the features mentioned, guests can control their television, lights, and room temperature with their voice. That will make turning on the air conditioner from bed much easier!

One thing customers should not anticipate is the devices being used as marketing tools. Users have reacted very negatively toward unexpected ads coming from their digital assistants. Therefore at this time hotels are using them as a way to enhance the guest experience rather than increase revenue.

Is Monday really the best day of the week to book flight tickets?

A friend suggested it’s best to book flight tickets on Monday as they are the cheapest that day. Is it true?
With the dynamic pricing systems airlines operate upon these days, it doesn’t really matter which day of the week you book your tickets. However, the booking in advance always enhances you chances of cracking a good deal. The sooner you book, the better.

Can I apply for a visa if my passport only has 2 pages left?
Most embassies require a minimum number of pages on your passport for issuing a visa. Also if you have only two or three pages left on your passport, you might run into trouble at the immigration stage. In case your trip covers multiple countries, your passport should have enough space for entry and exit stamps from each one of these. Therefore, if your passport has only two or three pages left, it is best to get it re-issued before applying for visa.

Do hotels levy a penalty for last-minute cancellations?
Cancellation policies vary from hotel to hotel. Sometimes hotels offer special discounted rates that come with a strict cancellation policy. In such situations cancellations are not entertained. Depending on the hotel, you could be charged a penalty for the entire stay (including taxes) on cancellation. It is best to look for hotels that offer a flexible cancellation policy if you anticipate last-minute cancellations. The rates might be higher than usual but at least you won’t have to pay the hefty penalty in case you do have to cancel.

Christmas New Year airfares aren’t hitting the roof yet

Better connectivity and increased capacities have ensured air fares aren’t flying through the roof during the week of Christmas-New Year both in the domestic sectors as well as key international tourism hotspots people throng to during this time of the year. While domestic sectors like Delhi-Goa, Mumbai-Goa, Delhi-Kochi and Mumbai-Kochi are costly by low single digits to almost 25 per cent, tickets to New York and Washington as London are down by nearly 27 per cent during the forthcoming Christmas-New Year weeks.

Aadhaar-linked seamless air travel from next year

Come 2018 and domestic flyers out of Kolkata, Ahmebadad and Vijayawada will whiz through airports if they link their Aadhaar number to air tickets at the time of booking. Airports Authority of India (AAI) will implement the government's ambitious "digi yatra" programme+ as a pilot project early next year from these three airports and then roll out this Aadhaar-based seamless travel experience at other airports.

US 'Golden Visa' Scheme May Be Extended

The three-month extension of the United States' EB5 visa scheme ended on December 8, however, experts are of the view that the scheme, popularly known as the "Golden Visa", is likely to be extended. Introduced by the US Congress in 1990, the EB5 visa programme allows an individual to invest $500,000 in either of two Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) - a high unemployment area in a US metropolis or a rural area outside of a metro - or $1 million in a non-TEA area that can create 10 or more jobs and get US citizenship in a shorter time than H1-B visa holders.

Unique Trips & Experiences to Watch in 2018

Extreme Trips
According to UNIGLOBE experts, extreme experiences to go where few have gone before are piquing the interest of travellers like never before. These include visiting rapidly changing destinations impacted by the threat of global warming like Cuba, Antarctica, Venice and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Epic adventures, such as African safaris or over-the-top experiences, like a private tour of the Grand Canyon, and, are also at the top of the list and include destinations like South Africa, the Galápagos Islands, Costa Rica and New Zealand.

Extended Vacations Overseas
Known as "sojourns", these trips are based on the concept of extended two-three months’ stays at apartments when travelling overseas. Designed for people who have the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in the world, these extended trips are more than just a vacation. They are truly immersive experiences. It’s like reliving that first summer abroad.

Art Quest
Those looking to soak in culture and trigger their creative side will find their perfect escape in the hubs of art around the world. These are cities where iconic design and classical concertos were born, and where the latest in creative experimentation is happening seemingly on every corner. Santa Fe, Vienna, Barcelona, Florence and Paris are among the favourites.

New Cruise Amenities
On the high seas, an increasing number of cruise lines are introducing innovative technology and state-of-the-art features. Some ships boast of race tracks that enable cruisers to navigate electric cars through hairpin turns and reach speeds up to 35 mph at 18 stories above the sea. Other cruise liners have created an inventive onboard experience with the launch of quarter-size wearable pieces for guests, to personalize everything from embarkation to ordering meals.

Emerging Destinations
"With the 2018 Winter Olympics just around the corner, South Korea is about to be thrust into the spotlight, " says a UNIGLOBE expert. Other top global destinations include Italy, South Africa, France, Iceland and Australia.

Multigenerational Travel
Multigenerational travel continues to be a leading industry-wide trend. By traveling together with younger and older relatives, families are able to reconnect. "Skip-gen" trips, where grandparents take grandchildren on a special adventure, leaving the parents behind to experience their own time off, are also becoming more popular. Japan is emerging as an untraditional multigenerational family travel destination.

WiFi drives your in-flight movie screen into extinction

The most important consideration for what goes on board an airplane is poundage. Installing a screen in each seat adds weight, which burns extra fuel, in turn costing more money. Also the screens are prone to cracks and breaks as people often poke and punch at them.

In personal-device entertainment or the ability to stream TV and movies to passenger gadgets from the server on the plane, seems like a more practical and economical option for airlines. It is therefore slated to be the in-flight entertainment technology of the future.

Streaming systems are cheap for airlines to install and maintain, do not require the hassles of wiring, and also don’t contribute to the weight penalty. With travellers hooked on to their devices and phones, which are continually upgraded and easy to use, it is obvious for airlines to focus on and invest in the best entertainment and fast connection options rather than installing seat-back monitors.

For those who’ve already started worrying about your device batteries dying on you mid-flight, thanks to all that streaming, hold on. Airlines are also gearing up to install charging devices at each seat to ensure your device never runs out of the power to entertain you.

“This trend is more relevant for domestic and shorter flights. The international fleets catering to the long haul warriors are not likely to let go of the traditional back seat screens just yet,” concludes a UNIGLOBE expert.

Get on Top of Travel Spends in 2018

1.Book in Advance
Institute a travel policy that encourages employees to book at least eight days prior to departure. As per UNIGLOBE experts you can save a significant amount per flight ticket by implementing such guidelines.

2.Don't forget the Regional Airports
UNIGLOBE experts recommend keeping an eye on fares at regional airports. Employees can often find greater savings on last-minute travel by utilizing smaller and mid-sized airports. Of course, monitoring a related increase in gas or car hire services must also be factored into this travel strategy.

3.Manage your Travel Schedule
Try to avoid last-minute travel during the summer months, when airfares tend to be at a higher rate. Instead, consider scheduling meetings and events in off-season travel months to help manage the bottom line.

4.Account for Ancillary Fees when considering travel options
Oftentimes, an upgrade to first class may seem like a luxury. But when taking in to account waived baggage fees and complimentary in-flight meals, that upgrade might end up saving money.

5.Use an Expense Management Platform
Track the total cost of air travel, including all ancillary fees. Adopting a system like the UNIGLOBE complete online trip management system, not only offers your company a secure portal for online booking, but also helps control costs through automated trip authorizations, reporting and policy compliance. This gives business managers access to greater transparency and better reporting on potential budget “problem” areas, which when addressed can help save more money.

Dreaming of the perfect vacation?

In today’s fast-paced work and social environment, where technology allows for 24/7 connectivity, taking time to switch off and recharge is critical.

According to Priya Naicker, Advice Manager at Old Mutual Personal Finance, even the most career-focused among us can fall victim to burnout if stress is not managed appropriately. Taking a break is essential for healthy living and maintaining high levels of career performance.

Leave is an important tool for both employers and employees as it helps to optimise performance and productivity over the long term, by contributing to a more healthy and engaged workforce, says Naicker.

“Employees often avoid taking their leave to prove their commitment or because they are over concerned about not meeting deadlines if they take more than an occasional short break. The important thing to remember is that sometimes you need to slow down to speed up and taking time off is a good way to re-evaluate your goals and assess whether you’re on track to sustain your professional momentum.”

There are many different ways to rest, recover and recharge, so the trick is to find the one that best suits your needs and budget. For some, a trip locally or abroad is the ideal way to disconnect and escape, while for others the freedom to explore and experience favourite attractions from the comfort of a home stay is its own reward.

Whatever your preference, Naicker says that planning for your vacation goals can give you a blueprint for success, turning your dreams into reality without sacrificing your financial well-being.

Check out these useful tips from Naicker:

Turn your holiday plans into a financial goal, to help you stay on track and make it a reality. Start by designing your ideal vacation based on your preferences, priorities and budget. Consider the costs involved such as travel, accommodation and/or activity costs, and decide on the ideal time. An accredited financial adviser can help you calculate how much you’ll need by factoring in inflation and other costs (e.g. currency fluctuation), and can also assist in recommending the most suitable way to save toward this.

Start with some action as soon as possible. Once you’ve chosen the option that suits your budget and well-being, take action toward setting the goal in motion. If you’ve identified that you need to save towards this, start as soon as possible, even if that means starting small.

Use the inspiration to trim unnecessary spending. Cut down on unnecessary expenses and channel those savings towards your goal.

Create the habit of saving. By making saving a habit, you increase the possibility of fun, reward and financial well-being. Resist the temptation to finance vacations through debt, as this often creates expensive repayments and future financial stress. Instead, optimise your savings and consider creative options that meet your budget.

Create and stick to your financial plan. A robust financial plan is one that is regularly assessed and adaptable to changing circumstances. An unexpected event or environmental fluctuations such as economic changes should not be cause for panic. Re-assess your plan with your financial adviser, make changes if needed and continue to make progress on your goals.

For many people, investing in experiences and activities that enrich your emotional and physical well-being are essential tools to optimise personal and career outputs. Planning for these enables the financial well-being that will support this journey.

'Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words' by Randall Munroe

Have you ever tried to learn something new only to be frustrated by incomprehensible jargon? Randall Munroe is here to help with this 64-page book that uses drawings and the 1,000 most common words to give readers simple explanations for different complicated subjects.

'Prisoners of Geography' By Tim Marshall

This 320 pager uses maps to offer insight into world history, answering everything from Putin’s obsession with Crimea to why the US became a superpower. The book is a reminder of the salience of geography in international affairs — of the threats such open plans continue to pose in this age of Predator drones and cyber-attacks.

'Real Artists Don’t Starve' by Jeff Goins

Bestselling author Jeff Goins dismantles the myth that being creative is a hindrance to success by revealing how an artistic temperament is in fact a competitive advantage. This 240-page book explores the competitive benefits of being creative, and opines creative people have a powerful tool that needs to be harnessed.

'Payoff: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations' by Dan Ariely

This 128-page book investigates the nature of motivation and is written by behavioural economist Dan Ariely. In it, he reveals fascinating new insights into motivation, showing that the subject is far more complex than we ever imagined. Along the way, he explores intriguing questions such as: Can giving employees bonuses harm productivity?

'The Visual Miscellaneum: A Colorful Guide to the World’s Most Consequential Trivia' by David McCandless

The book takes a unique look at the modern information age, helping readers make sense of the countless statistics and random facts that constantly bombard us. It uses graphs, charts, and illustrations in its 256 pages to help readers make sense of facts and statistics. It covers topics from how long it takes different condiments to spoil to world maps of Internet search terms.

'We Should All Be Feminists' By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

What does “feminism” mean today? That is the question at the heart of We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It’s a personal, eloquently-argued essay adapted from her much-viewed TEDx talk of the same name. A MacArthur Genius Grant winner, Adichie provides a modernday definition of feminism, and explores the sexual politics at work in society.

'The War of Independence' By John Fiske

Originally published in 1890, this 115-page book provides a historical perspective on the American Revolution, a hundred years following the war, rather than today’s more than 230 years. It was written by a historian and scholar who graduated from Harvard Law School.

Where to Travel in 2018, From Shanghai to Scotland’s Coolest City

1. Faeroe Islands

While windy and remote, the 18 islands are not all woolly sorts and switchbacks. Of note for adventurous sophisticates: the native knitwear label Gudrun & Gudrun, the Ostrom design store and the Michelin-starred tasting menus at KOKS. SAS recently launched two-hour direct flights from Copenhagen.

2. Puebla, Mexico

A two-hour drive from Mexico City, this Spanish colonial city is finally emerging from the capital’s shadow. The splashy new International Museum of the Baroque serves as one magnet. The city’s church- and palace-packed historic center—under furious repair after September’s earthquake—is another. And two new high-end hotels, Rosewood Puebla, and the Hotel Cartesiano are helping to reel in the luxury-minded.

3. Kuelap, Peru

Think of Kuelap’s ruins as the Machu Picchu of the north. Ten thousand feet up in the Andes, not far from the Amazon, the 6th-century site was built by the Chachapoyas, known as the warriors of the clouds. Once an arduous journey, it can now be reached in 20 minutes, thanks to a new 2½-mile-long cable-car ride that zips you through the staggering landscape. Tickets run about $6, and the hotel Libertador Trujillo can serve as base camp.

4. Minneapolis

The twin city that gave the world Prince and Bob Dylan is now luring curious foodies. In 2017, Minneapolis claimed 13 James Beard Award semifinalists. When Gavin Kaysen, chef/owner of the wildly popular Spoon & Stable opened his modern bistro Bellecour last spring, he booked 1,000 reservations in the first 24 hours. Other notable names to drop: Thomas Kim, who left Los Angeles to establish the Rabbit Hole, and Erik Anderson, who sharpened his knives at the Catbird Seat in Nashville and took over Minneapolis’s Grande Cafe earlier this year.

5. Dundee, Scotland

A coastal college town, Dundee has emerged as Scotland’s coolest city (see the old public library turned underground club). In 2018, the V&A Museum of Design will debut as the centerpiece of a $1.5 billion transformation of the faded riverfront. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the new V&A will celebrate the country’s unsung design heritage—from jute to Minecraft.

6. Grenada

On the southern edge of the Caribbean hurricane belt—hit by only three storms in 50 years—it’s flourishing while many of its neighbors rebuild. In the spring, Silversands resort will bring minimalist luxury to the island’s southwestern tip, with 43 suites, nine villas and the region’s longest pool.

7. Madagascar

Plants and wildlife that are found nowhere else thrive in this African island nation, but discerning visitors have typically found the accommodations a bit of a bummer. Tour operator Abercrombie & Kent advised travelers to pack patience. For big spenders, the wait is over. In June, one of the investors behind North Island, a kingly retreat in the Seychelles, opened Time + Tide Miavana on Madagascar’s private island of Nosy Ankao: 14 solar-powered villas, each with a pool and butler. Potential visitors should be aware, however, of a recent outbreak of plague pneumonia in the country’s two main cities and other areas; check cdc.gov for updates.

8. Montenegro

In June, this tiny country bordering Croatia became the 29th member state of NATO. Other changes afoot: One & Only will open Portonovi, its first resort in Europe overlooking the unreasonably beautiful Boka Bay, in early 2019. Before then you can drop anchor at the Regent Porto Montenegro in a posh marina a 20-minute drive from the medieval town of Kotor, with its steep alleyways and Unesco World Heritage status.

9. Shanghai

Paris of the East now has a dedicated Michelin guide—30 starred restaurants—and is about to get its own Pompidou Center at the end of 2018. A hotel boom also seems to be upping the aesthetic ante in China’s biggest city (pop. 24 million). You can stay at Waterhouse, the highly stylized renovation of an abandoned industrial building in the heart of South Bund or flee the city’s tizzy at the new Amanyangyun, a forest retreat formed out of 13 relocated Ming dynasty villas and 24 newly built suites, a 45-minute drive from the city.

10. La Rioja, Spain

In Spain’s foremost wine region, medieval hilltop villages play foil to modern architectural designs by Calatrava, Gehry and Hadid. Meanwhile, unexpected Scandinavian flair has infiltrated the gastro-bars of the capital, Logrono, and the guest rooms in newly opened places like Hotel Viura.

Advance planning key to European vacation

But what about a trip in July and August? There are many reasons not to travel in Europe during those months — crowds, high hotel rates, jam-packed museums — but for those high-season months, there’s now an additional negative reason: weather.

For the past three years, the southern half of Europe has been hit by successive heat waves. During much of July and August, there have been countries experiencing several days at a time of temperatures higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. And when a European country is that hot, the lack of air conditioning in most accomodations can make matters dangerous indeed. Elderly people or people with health conditions often are advised to avoid Southern Europe during these times of global warming.

January and February also are the period when the short-term apartment rentals for late spring and early autumn are most available. Apartment accommodations now are heavily chosen by tourists for the authenticity of the experience.

Low-cost hostel accommodations also are wide open for booking in January and February for later stays. The young people who make use of hostels are notorious for not planning ahead, which means a lack of competition for these increasingly comfortable digs.

So, don’t delay — make use of the winter months for making your plans, and you’ll enjoy major advantages when you later embark on a travel adventure to Europe.
