SpiceJet to shift 22 domestic flights from T1 to T2

SpiceJet has announced that it will shift 22 flights from Terminal 1 (T1) of Indira Gandhi International airport to Terminal 2 (T2) following March 25. All the remaining flights of the airline will continue to operate from Terminal 1. To be shifted are flights serving the sectors of Cochin, Ahmedabad, Patna, Pune, Goa, Surat, and Gorakhpur. To facilitate easier identification for passengers, the airline has programmed all the new flights operating to and from T2 to have a four digit flight number starting with number ‘8’, for example SG 8913. The low-cost airline has arranged for regular bus service between the terminals for passengers for use by transit flyers as well as those who might come to the wrong terminal for their flight have also been made.

UK think tank pushes for cheaper visas for Indians

A leading UK-based think tank has released a research to support its call for a new, more economical visa regime to attract Indian visitors to the country. The new UK-India Visa Agreement being proposed would reduce the cost of a two-year visa from 388 pounds to just 89 pounds and allow travellers to make repeat visits within two years. This would mirror the reduced cost two-year multiple entry visa that was launched in January 2016 for visitors travelling both ways between the UK and China.

Mumbai to Pune in just 25 minutes

Come 2024, the travel time between Mumbai, the financial capital of India to Pune, a leading manufacturing & IT hub will be drastically shortened to just 14-25 minutes. What's more the cost of travel will be pegged at almost the same price as travelling in a cab or airplane, as Richard Branson backed Virgin Hyperloop One signed the framework agreement with the Maharashtra government to build a hyperloop between Pune and Mumbai beginning with an operational demonstration track.

IndiGo Airlines commences operations to Colombo

IndiGo Airlines has launched operations to Colombo. The airline now connects Chennai and Bengaluru to the Sri Lankan capital. With this new addition, Colombo becomes the eighth international and the 49th overall destination on the airline’s network. Commenting on the launch, Captain Ashim Mittra, vice president, flight operations at IndiGo says, “IndiGo is delighted to commence its new daily services to and from Colombo. These new connections will not only boost corporate and leisure travel but will also contribute to significant growth in cross border trade and commerce.”

Trai recommends allowing mobile services during air travel

Air passengers will soon be able to make calls and browse the internet while flying in Indian airspace, with the telecom regulator recommending that domestic and international airlines be permitted to offer both services. Internet access through Wi-Fi will be allowed within the aircraft, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said, adding that making calls will be allowed once an aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters, it said. For making calls, the airplane mode in the phone will have to be kept off, although usually it is kept on during the duration of the flight.

Aadhaar-linked seamless air travel from next year

Come 2018 and domestic flyers out of Kolkata, Ahmebadad and Vijayawada will whiz through airports if they link their Aadhaar number to air tickets at the time of booking. Airports Authority of India (AAI) will implement the government's ambitious "digi yatra" programme+ as a pilot project early next year from these three airports and then roll out this Aadhaar-based seamless travel experience at other airports.

US 'Golden Visa' Scheme May Be Extended

The three-month extension of the United States' EB5 visa scheme ended on December 8, however, experts are of the view that the scheme, popularly known as the "Golden Visa", is likely to be extended. Introduced by the US Congress in 1990, the EB5 visa programme allows an individual to invest $500,000 in either of two Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) - a high unemployment area in a US metropolis or a rural area outside of a metro - or $1 million in a non-TEA area that can create 10 or more jobs and get US citizenship in a shorter time than H1-B visa holders.

Turn your holiday plans into a financial goal, to help you stay on track and make it a reality. Start by designing your ideal vacation based on your preferences, priorities and budget. Consider the costs involved such as travel, accommodation and/or activity costs, and decide on the ideal time. An accredited financial adviser can help you calculate how much you’ll need by factoring in inflation and other costs (e.g. currency fluctuation), and can also assist in recommending the most suitable way to save toward this.
Start with some action as soon as possible. Once you’ve chosen the option that suits your budget and well-being, take action toward setting the goal in motion. If you’ve identified that you need to save towards this, start as soon as possible, even if that means starting small.
Use the inspiration to trim unnecessary spending. Cut down on unnecessary expenses and channel those savings towards your goal.
Create the habit of saving. By making saving a habit, you increase the possibility of fun, reward and financial well-being. Resist the temptation to finance vacations through debt, as this often creates expensive repayments and future financial stress. Where to Travel in 2018, From Shanghai to Scotland’s Coolest City

1. Faeroe Islands

While windy and remote, the 18 islands are not all woolly sorts and switchbacks. Of note for adventurous sophisticates: the native knitwear label Gudrun & Gudrun, the Ostrom design store and the Michelin-starred tasting menus at KOKS. SAS recently launched two-hour direct flights from Copenhagen.

2. Puebla, Mexico

A two-hour drive from Mexico City, this Spanish colonial city is finally emerging from the capital’s shadow. The splashy new International Museum of the Baroque serves as one magnet. The city’s church- and palace-packed historic center—under furious repair after September’s earthquake—is another. And two new high-end hotels, Rosewood Puebla, and the Hotel Cartesiano are helping to reel in the luxury-minded.

3. Kuelap, Peru

Think of Kuelap’s ruins as the Machu Picchu of the north. Ten thousand feet up in the Andes, not far from the Amazon, the 6th-century site was built by the Chachapoyas, known as the warriors of the clouds. Once an arduous journey, it can now be reached in 20 minutes, thanks to a new 2½-mile-long cable-car ride that zips you through the staggering landscape. Tickets run about $6, and the hotel Libertador Trujillo can serve as base camp.

4. Minneapolis

The twin city that gave the world Prince and Bob Dylan is now luring curious foodies. In 2017, Minneapolis claimed 13 James Beard Award semifinalists. When Gavin Kaysen, chef/owner of the wildly popular Spoon & Stable opened his modern bistro Bellecour last spring, he booked 1,000 reservations in the first 24 hours. Other notable names to drop: Thomas Kim, who left Los Angeles to establish the Rabbit Hole, and Erik Anderson, who sharpened his knives at the Catbird Seat in Nashville and took over Minneapolis’s Grande Cafe earlier this year.

5. Dundee, Scotland

A coastal college town, Dundee has emerged as Scotland’s coolest city (see the old public library turned underground club). In 2018, the V&A Museum of Design will debut as the centerpiece of a $1.5 billion transformation of the faded riverfront. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the new V&A will celebrate the country’s unsung design heritage—from jute to Minecraft.

6. Grenada

On the southern edge of the Caribbean hurricane belt—hit by only three storms in 50 years—it’s flourishing while many of its neighbors rebuild. In the spring, Silversands resort will bring minimalist luxury to the island’s southwestern tip, with 43 suites, nine villas and the region’s longest pool.

7. Madagascar

Plants and wildlife that are found nowhere else thrive in this African island nation, but discerning visitors have typically found the accommodations a bit of a bummer. Tour operator Abercrombie & Kent advised travelers to pack patience. For big spenders, the wait is over. In June, one of the investors behind North Island, a kingly retreat in the Seychelles, opened Time + Tide Miavana on Madagascar’s private island of Nosy Ankao: 14 solar-powered villas, each with a pool and butler. Potential visitors should be aware, however, of a recent outbreak of plague pneumonia in the country’s two main cities and other areas; check cdc.gov for updates.

8. Montenegro

In June, this tiny country bordering Croatia became the 29th member state of NATO. Other changes afoot: One & Only will open Portonovi, its first resort in Europe overlooking the unreasonably beautiful Boka Bay, in early 2019. Before then you can drop anchor at the Regent Porto Montenegro in a posh marina a 20-minute drive from the medieval town of Kotor, with its steep alleyways and Unesco World Heritage status.

9. Shanghai

Paris of the East now has a dedicated Michelin guide—30 starred restaurants—and is about to get its own Pompidou Center at the end of 2018. A hotel boom also seems to be upping the aesthetic ante in China’s biggest city (pop. 24 million). You can stay at Waterhouse, the highly stylized renovation of an abandoned industrial building in the heart of South Bund or flee the city’s tizzy at the new Amanyangyun, a forest retreat formed out of 13 relocated Ming dynasty villas and 24 newly built suites, a 45-minute drive from the city.

10. La Rioja, Spain

In Spain’s foremost wine region, medieval hilltop villages play foil to modern architectural designs by Calatrava, Gehry and Hadid. Meanwhile, unexpected Scandinavian flair has infiltrated the gastro-bars of the capital, Logrono, and the guest rooms in newly opened places like Hotel Viura.

Advance planning key to European vacation

But what about a trip in July and August? There are many reasons not to travel in Europe during those months — crowds, high hotel rates, jam-packed museums — but for those high-season months, there’s now an additional negative reason: weather.

For the past three years, the southern half of Europe has been hit by successive heat waves. During much of July and August, there have been countries experiencing several days at a time of temperatures higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. And when a European country is that hot, the lack of air conditioning in most accomodations can make matters dangerous indeed. Elderly people or people with health conditions often are advised to avoid Southern Europe during these times of global warming.

January and February also are the period when the short-term apartment rentals for late spring and early autumn are most available. Apartment accommodations now are heavily chosen by tourists for the authenticity of the experience.

Low-cost hostel accommodations also are wide open for booking in January and February for later stays. The young people who make use of hostels are notorious for not planning ahead, which means a lack of competition for these increasingly comfortable digs.

So, don’t delay — make use of the winter months for making your plans, and you’ll enjoy major advantages when you later embark on a travel adventure to Europe.
